I am sitting at my computer today, listening to the washing machine whirring and clunking, and knowing that once again we will NOT have dried-on-the-line-in-the-sunshine towels this week. Sigh. It’s been a rainy summer here in Ottawa, folks.

On a positive note, the rain situation is good for the wild fires in northern Ontario. And our basement has not flooded. Many in the Ottawa area have not been as lucky.

On the fashion side of things, I’ve gotten a lot of wear out of my Veja sneakers this summer, confirming my suspicion that I need a new, better pair of white sneakers. My newish umbrella is doing yeoman service and holding up spectacularly well. My second umbrella, bought in 2005 at Tesco in Yorkshire, and kept in my car for emergencies, has also proven useful to friends and family who didn’t think to bring an umbrella for an outing. I’ve proven to myself that wading through ankle-deep puddles in my old sandals from the nineties will not ruin them. And I have stopped obsessing about my hair. Hoods that smush and rain that blows under umbrellas in high winds render even the most carefully sprayed hair either flat or curly as shit. If you’ll pardon the profanity.

That’s my sister Carolyn and me, below, on our day out in Almonte recently. We’d spent the day before strolling around Manotick in the sunshine and visiting my favourite Columbian coffee shop for lunch on the patio. But the day we earmarked for the hour-long drive to Almonte was not as nice.

It rained. Then it rained harder. As we walked, and then ran, down the street to the restaurant for lunch it began to blow and thunder and lightening. When we sat down in the restaurant the power went out. So, it was cold salad for us when we really wanted some warm pasta or pizza. Later as we made our way back to the car, no sense window-shopping in the rain, and the power outage precluded browsing in closed shops, the power came back on. Just in time for us to visit Bob’s Bakery for treats, and the coffee shop nearby for lattes. Yah. We would not starve on the way home.

Not the day we’d planned, but we were not dismayed. Like last year when we got lost on a day out in New Brunswick it was, as Carolyn said, an adventure. Ha. Hubby still cannot believe that we got lost in Harvey, New Brunswick. If you’ve ever been there you’ll understand.

On our rainy, windy, thunder-y day out.

On the fashion-acquisition side of things, I’ve not been shopping for new clothes for myself since I bought my lace skirt back in early June, bringing my “Rule of Five” total to four new items this year. I bought a sweat shirt in Calgary because I needed something warmer than what I’d packed. A sweatshirt will be good for walking, or hiking, or working out. And according to “Rule of Five” rules work-out gear doesn’t count. Uh, oh. I just looked that up, and I may have imagined that rule.

I’ve not been vintage shopping or second-hand shopping at all this summer. A couple of planned excursions were rained out. The day I ran through a puddle in my nineties sandals being one of them. We’d nixed the planned vintage stop, and waited in the car while the rain lashed, before making a dash for the restaurant where we had a lunch reservation.

Except there was that wonderful consignment store in Calgary which my niece Ashley told me about. And it was, after all, only a five minute walk from my brother and sister-in-law’s house. And browsing second-hand clothes is a great distraction from worrying about a loved one who is in hospital.

Vespucci Consignment is an amazing place. It’s enormous and filled with pretty much anything you’d want. Jeans, tee shirts, active wear, dresses, shoes, whatever. Many of the pieces are reasonably priced, but don’t shop here for thrift-store prices. They have an impressive collection of high end garments too. Their stock looks pristine and way more affordable than the items when they were new. Although, even at consignment prices, some of the luxury items were way above my spending limit. Still they have a very smiley, friendly, and down-right adorable sales staff. See below. And my sister-in-law Yu Ling and I happily browsed, although we didn’t buy.

Despite the fact there’s nothing new in my wardrobe, I did make a summer fashion video this week, which you can watch below. It’s not strictly a fashion video. Because it’s not about new purchases, or new trends, or “new-in” pieces in my wardrobe. It’s mostly about styling instead of shopping and shopping my closet, with a few pithy thoughts (aka my opinions) on fashion in general. And there are lots of outfit clips.

Have a look. Hope you like it.

As usual I had fun making it. There are some glitches, of course. But I’m still learning, my friends. And I have a ton left to learn.

Thanks to Hubby’s golfing buddy, Jo Barkley-Probst, for the music. Jo is a wonderful musician and he’s so generous to send me his original music when I need something that will work in a video.

Hubby and I are off to New Brunswick next week. I’ll be posting from down there for a bit. Stay tuned for lobster anecdotes and rambling around the Maritimes adventures.

Okay, maybe not really big adventures. Just small adventures. That’s what we like best after all.

Joy Comes Back

You know, it seems as if joy comes back in response to the simplest things: a walk on a crisp day, time with loved ones, a good laugh.

2016 Book Roundup… Looking Backward and Forward

Hellooooo. Happy New Year. Long time no see. I’ve been on a bit of an unscheduled blog break. I intended to take a week off, but it morphed into two. In the meantime we’ve been doing a lot of this. Rising before dawn to get on the road early. The drive to New Brunswick usually takes us around 11 hours…. even with this lovely new highway through the province. That’s not all driving time, of course. There’s stopping for egg mcmuffin time, and stopping for gas and tea time, and then the “nature breaks” as they call them in the Tour de ...

Cashmere Sweaters with Everything

I love cashmere sweaters with whatever. With jeans and boots or skirts, tweed jackets or down coats. But it has to be good quality cashmere.

  1. I did enjoy the video . Really good music & my favourite outfit was the white & brown one . I love that Maxmara top . It’s funny to see you getting lots of rain . Your summers are usually so good & ours are usually so wet . We haven’t had a rainy day for weeks so we have drought & fires & I miss green grass . Endless sunshine is quite monotonous . I’ve not been as restrained as you shopping wise , mainly because I don’t need many hot weather clothes normally but the weather isn’t normal now . So there has been a little shopping going on . A few loose linen shirts in unusual shades , one in ‘dark thistle’ & another ‘in mint tea ‘ both from Toast . That should bring on the rain ! Safe journey on your trip ‘ home ‘ & have a great time .

  2. Lobster anecdotes will be a treat. A friend of mine has returned from a camping holiday on the Isle of Skye where they had lobster and chips. At an oyster shack. Her photo made me very envious. As envious as I am of your rain.

  3. I did enjoy your video and I love your outfits especally when you wear your Uniqlo black jacket! Is my favorit too. In Switzerland we have no Uniqlo but where ever we are travelling, we are looking for it and I always find anything that I love for long time.
    Greetings from Seitzerland. Mirjam

  4. I really enjoyed your video and some of the things you said. I do feel in our society today we buy much more than we need. That is not only true for clothing but cosmetics and skincare. If we just buy this one more serum or lotion we will look a lot younger. It gets out of control quickly.
It too easy to sit at home and shop.

  5. Love that you made it to Vespucci here in Calgary. It has been a go to shop for thirty some years. I have many great finds but have to be on the hunt for a specific thing or I find myself overcome by the huge amount of stock which is all on consignment. It is for treasure hunting. I am always shocked by the exquisite things people decide they are done with. It is also in Vancouver and Toronto.

  6. New Brunswick! I have just started doing some research on my paternal grandfather who I never knew. He was born in Bathurst, New Brunswick in 1896 on his family farm.
I’m wondering what it’s like there. I understand the economic situation was dire in the 1890s and many people immigrated to Manchester, New Hampshire, for employment.

  7. Oh, I know well the effects of rain on hair! Living a lifetime of curly hair on the Wet Coast had lent a, let’s say, bohemian effect to whatever style I have since the toddler days when my Dad recited rhymes about little girls with curls in the middle of their for’eads (to rhyme with “orrid), of course!
Ah, lobsters in the Maritimes! My grandson would be so envious — he’s recently discovered these, not sure how as an Eleven-year-old on the other coast, but he was thrilled when I agreed to order a lobster roll plate for us to share when we went out to lunch last week. A half-order each was the best I could offer at the price lobster costs out here!

  8. Sue,I love your style. It is  wonderful to watch how one styles ones clothes, getting ideas and inspiration, sometimes to try the  opposite, sometimes implementing new elements…I don’t appreciate shopping hauls and unboxing, love wearing the same outfits (if I loved them and if they were how I want to feel and present myself) again and again. They “sparkle joy” and become part of me,I know they look good and I’m free to enjoy (or endure) my day.
But,I like to be informed, and tweak here and there  . Or change the narrative completely
    Enjoy your trip
I used to love summers, but we have so many days in a row near 40°C (so exhausting),so a rainy day or two would be fine

  9. Great video. I enjoyed seeing some of the results of your closet shopping. The brown and white outfit along with the blue and white shirt are my favourites although the black and white striped top looks to be versatile.
Some years I buy hardly anything as the fashions don’t appeal but this year I have bought a few pieces of slouchy knitwear which I have been enjoying in our cold but dry winter. We also had a very wet summer so I can empathise over hair issues. Mine just goes frizzy in the damp and no amount of spray keeps it smooth. Adding a hat or rain hood just equals total disaster!
I hope you have a lovely time in New Brunswick and look forward to hearing about your adventures.

  10. Such a great post, totally agree , we should try to do our part to save this planet we are on.
Have a great holiday, and thank you Jo for the music.

  11. I did enjoy your video! The thing that intrigues me is that your tastes and ideas are so similar to mine (and many others). I am a world away down in New Zealand!

  12. We have had rain in the earlier summer. I cannot stand to have wet feet!! So until it stopped absolutely no sandals came out. Too hot for boots so tennies got a whole lotta love.

  13. My heart stirs when you say you have narrow feet, because I do, too, and finding shoes, especially sandals, is NOT easy. There is a dearth of nice second hand shops around our rural California town and I have found that shopping Poshmark for shoes is hit and miss. If you have any tips for where to find narrow sizes, please share! Thank you, Sue.

  14. I really enjoyed this fashion video! The way you buttoned the blue and white striped oversized shirt really caught my eye. It reminded me that little tweaks can make an outfit look current as well as stylish. On a side note, I had cataract surgery yesterday and laughed at myself for trying to dress nicely without any makeup or jewelry. I do think my outfit was pretty cute-lol!

  15. Hi Sue, I’m a little late watching although I read your post days ago 😊 I really enjoyed your vlog and like Wendy my favourite was outfit was the white with brown accessories and the blue stripe shirt / tunic a close second!
So interesting to hear about your weather, when ours has been so hot. I’m living in linen shorts and shirts or dresses. Trousers just feel uncomfortably hot!
We were in Paris recently and for the first time ever, I struggled to enjoy being out in the city due to the heat which made me a little sad. We had one day in the Bavarian mountains where it rained and honestly I loved it! It was so refreshing and the scenery was beautiful too.
Take care and enjoy your trip.
    Rosie xx
