Good morning my friends. Hubby and I are in New Brunswick this week, which I guess you already knew.

It’s been hot here with sunny, almost cloudless skies.

Field in bloom near Perth Andover.

We’ve only been here since Wednesday, but so far Carolyn and I spent a day in Saint Andrews with our niece and her son. We browsed the shops, ate a fabulous lunch, and just wandered around. Saint Andrews is one of my favourite spots in the world.

Lobster roll New Brunswick style.
View of a bit of the town from the wharf.

Hubby and I have been biking and walking the trail. Hubby did some brook trout fishing one day. But there are wildfires over north (in Miramichi), so all crown land in the province is now closed. He’s disappointed to miss out on more fishing, especially since he was unable to go on a canoe trip this year. But we both realize that officials are doing the right thing by keeping people out of the bush.

Still we have lots of things planned for this upcoming week. Visits with friends and family. A couple of events to attend in Fredericton. A coffee date with childhood friends. And next weekend we leave for Nova Scotia for a few days with my sister Connie and her family.

I know this post is really brief. And next week I won’t be able to post at all. So I hope you’ll forgive me .

But… I’m on summer holidays. That’s what Hubby always says when we need an excuse to have that second helping of steamed clams, or that second glass of wine, or when we’ve been lolling on the deck with our coffees, yakking to my sister, and we realize that’s it’s eleven o’clock and we “haven’t rolled a wheel,” as my stepfather used to say. So those good intentions to go for an early bike ride have not been realized. But early afternoon will be just as good. Right?

I mean, we ARE on summer holidays.

Now it’s your turn to take over the conversation my friends. I’ll see you in two weeks. 😊

The Geezer Paradox

The older we get the less we care about being cool, thus making us actually cool. This is the geezer paradox.

  1. Enjoy your summer holiday, Sue! Your last post reminded me of a lifetime of summer holidays…swimming, watching cricket, days blending together…perfect! Have fun! Xx

    1. Agreed. It is family and friends on the patio weather permitting. A time to catch up on missed outings. So far August seems to have an almost full menu of visits and one with a girl friend from nursing at our favourite restaurant this coming Thursday and so keep on summer!!!!!! Have fun everyone.

  3. Happy Summer Holidays, Sue! Writing from Michigan while visiting longtime friends. Lots of memories, laughter, and good food! Laughed at your stepfather’s quote, “haven’t rolled a wheel,”. We are experiencing the same here. We are all in our 70’s and are enjoying the “fruits of our labor”. Blessed beyond belief.
This part of the country is beautiful during the summer…so lush and green! Different from Southern California! I’ve been receiving Fire Alerts during my visit…yes, this a regular app on my phone.
Continue to have a marvelous time with your sister, family, and friends!

  4. We are about to “roll a wheel” to get started on our summer vacation. We will be driving the RV out to Manitoba. This is the trip we planned after we canceled our trip to Florida last Jan/Feb.

I love Cecilia’s comment that it is important to create emptiness to see what else can come and be open for it. (And the sentence is much more expressive in French).

I’m looking forward to revelling in the beauty of this land and visiting a few cities and towns that I haven’t visited before.

  5. Célia said it best above – to let go is divine. It’s nice to see these places on the east coast. I had to go to Fredericton for work once and I found it to be charming. I wondered why I’d never been there before! Have not been to St Andrews. That lobster roll looks wonderful!

  6. I’ve had a google & your St Andrews looks like a lovely old town , no wonder it’s your favourite . Our UK St Andrews is pretty nice too but the fish & chips are rather different . Have a wonderful holiday & tell us all about it when you get home .

  7. Happy trails Sue! Enjoy NB and NS…St.Andrew’s is such a pretty place, my SIL put herself through college working summers there at The Algonquin hotel.
Heading off to PEI for six weeks,
it’s hot there too I hear, might have to sleep on the beach!
Hopefully no new fires in the Maritimes.

  8. Best lobster roll I ever had was in St. Andrews. And I’ve had a lot of lobster rolls over the years… Your picture brought back memories.

Glad you’re enjoying your vacation, even without the fishing! We’re home until mid-September – so many people in Europe travel in August that it’s best to dig in and enjoy our beachside life.

  9. Happy summer holiday! It sounds blissful being with family and friends and not worrying if the wheels don’t roll. The lobster roll looks delicious.
Of course we are in the middle of winter and although we have had some sunny days the wind has been icy coming straight from the South Pole!

  10. Sue enjoy your summer holidays of visiting family, friends, lobster rolls, reading etc! Sounds glorious. We are sticking to day trips around home for the rest of August, and enjoying the city including swimming in the Ottawa River at some of the local spots. Doing lots of reading too. I’m in the middle of Michael Crummey’s latest, “The Adversary” and loving it.
Nancy- enjoy Manitoba, hope it is not too smokey. We were there and SK in May.

  11. Thanks so much for your post. Everything you wrote reminded me of our trip to the Maritimes in 2019. We arrived 3 days after Dorian and the devastation was heartbreaking. I, too, fell in love with St. Andrew’s. Keep having a wonderful time with friends and family. And it seems that Nova Scotia will be spared from Erin’s wrath.
