To misquote Cole Porter, and Ella Fitzgerald: Ms. Burpee regrets that she’s unable to blog today. I am so sorry my friends. But you’ll have to wait until next week to hear the full story about our Toronto trip.
If I wrote today it would just be a rather boring laundry list of events. And according to one of my favourite “writers on writing” books, a laundry list of events does not make for good writing.
I will say that we had a great trip. We ate and talked and laughed and shopped, and met up with some wonderful new friends who read this blog. I am so pleased that Catherine suggested the meet-up. Thanks again, Catherine.
Oh… and I blew my Rule of Five pledge clean out of the water, so to speak. But as the ladies said on Wednesday night: “What happens in Toronto, stays in Toronto.” Ha. I’ll tell you guys how badly I went off piste next week, but only if you promise not to tell anyone.

My excuse for not putting out a proper post today is as follows: I have not unpacked yet, I have a mountain of laundry, and I am bagged. It’s amazing what three straight days of talking and shopping can do to you. Ha. And yesterday, the train trip home went from a lovely 4-hour treat, a quiet time to eat and sip wine and read my new book, to a 10 hour slog. There was an accident on the line which closed the tracks, and we sat just outside of Toronto for 3+ hours, then encountered various waits along the way as the crews attempted to deal with the overload of trains who’d been delayed much longer than we’d been. When I staggered off the train at midnight Hubby quipped that I could have flown from Ottawa to Spain in that time, including a lay-over in Toronto.
I must say that everyone on the train was most pleasant about everything, the passengers and the exhausted crew. I mean, really, in the greater scheme of things, it wasn’t a biggie for any of us. And it seemed that everyone knew it. No whiners were to be found. I thought that part was lovely.
So as a result of my obviously first-world problems (“Poor me I’m tired from all the fun I had and then the sitting on the train reading my book.”) I find I am utterly uncreative today. I plan to remedy that with lots of reading on the deck, interspersed with bouts of laundry. And maybe a nap.
So I will close here, and leave you with a little Ella Fitzgerald. Don’t you just love her voice?
See you next week.

Sounds like you had a great time . Shame about the train hiccups but at least you had a good book to read . I know because I am reading the same book right now . So we’ll look forward hearing all about your exploits next week .
That book was perfect for reading on a train. I also watched much of the 1995 Pride and Prejudice miniseries on my i-pad. 🙂
We’ll be hear waiting patiently when you’re all rested up. Funny how exhausting leisure time can be, right?! 😉
I cam’t believe how much talking all the time takes out of me. Like the end of the first week of school in September. 🙂
So curious about all the Toronto adventures.Utterly agree with Frances-leisure time( if not reading/listening to the music/ watching something interesting) could be exausting 🙂

Fun is tiring, right? 🙂
Well, we need Ms. Burpee to be in top form. Rest up, and I look forward to the debrief and reflections!
I was certainly not in top form this morning. Reminded me of the morning after a late parent-teacher interview night. Back in the nineties when the smart teachers booked a VCR for their class for first period on the day after interviews. Took some forward planning to make sure the video was curriculum appropriate. Ha. I’m all rested and raring to go now, though.
What an attractive group of ladies! Love the sparkly glasses on the other Sue.
That’s too bad about the train! I took the train from Union back to Ottawa last evening at 5:21 and it made it in only about a half an hour late. It was a nice ride. At least you had a good book and patient riders around you, as you mentioned. Your trip must have been Friday afternoon.
Looking forward to hearing about your shopping finds. I was kicking myself over and over for making my trip only a quick art day trip (yeah, not smart) and not leaving time for shopping. Did see a film being made though, which was fun.
Yes, my trip home was on Friday. I boarded in Toronto at 2 pm, and disembarked at almost midnight. Debbie and I were wishing we had an extra day to do something more cultural than shopping. I was amazed at how unused to city walking I am. Especially in the heat.
It’s tiring for sure!! Sounds as though you had a wonderful trip all the same!
I realized that ny train was the 5:37 on Sat and the morning train was at 5:21 (a stretch but meant I had the whole day there). I’m going to do that trip again but hopefully take an extra day or two and will both shop and maybe see an opera and some places I wanted to see again but didn’t have time for. Will be happy to hear of any stores you enjoyed (especially independents and vintage!).
Thanks so much for the song. I haven’t listened to her sing for too long. Such a gorgeous, unique and perfect voice! Maybe you should make a song a regular feature…Looking forward to reading about your trip.
That’s an idea. Thanks, Marci.
Everyone needs to take a break once in a while. I can’t wait to see your new purchases next week.
Have a nap and we will see you soon!
Fatigue from Fun? I’m all for it! Look forward to this new type of adventure…meeting some of your smart, articulate readers! Gee…and they look great, too! Thanks for sharing!
Triple “F”… it’s a thing. Ha.
